Detection Of Autism In Young Children

Autism can be difficult to diagnose with some children, especially with younger children. Knowing what to look for, or if there is something that seems out of the ordinary can easily be missed. As parents we tend to look the other way, or explain behaviour’s that would otherwise seem alarming in other children. Part of parenting is trying to protect your child, but when signs of autism can emerge it may become easier to look the other way. Especially when those signs emerge at an early age, it can be extremely difficult to want to believe that your baby or toddler has a problem. The earlier the detection, the more help you can be to your child. The younger your child is, the greater the impact of treatment on symptoms of autism and other developmental problems. So watching for warning signs in babies and toddlers is vital since you may be able to minimize the problem and interrupt the diseases development. The best way to understand autism is to know the early signs. There are ways to know if your child may become diagnosed with autism, or at least needs to be seen by a professional.

Understanding means knowing what it means and consists of. Autism is a spectrum of closely related disorders with a shared core of symptoms. Autism spectrum disorders appear in infancy and early childhood which is why is it important to deal with symptoms as soon as they present themselves. These symptoms generally begin causing delays in many basic areas of development such as learning to talk, play, and interact with others. As your child grows from infancy on, it will become noticeable if your baby or toddler has difficulty interacting with you , or anyone else in the family. Engaging in play should be one of the most natural things for a toddler to do. If your child requires stimulation to make eye contact or simply just performs repetitive tasks instead of actually playing there may be cause for concern. The signs and symptoms of autism vary widely which can make it difficult to pinpoint as there is no specifics to look for. The effects of autism are also wide spread. Some autistic children have only mild impairments, while others have more obstacles to overcome.

The symptoms that will become most noticeable will be your child's ability when communicating verbally and non-verbally. Relating to others and the world around them should be natural, if you notice that you child experiences difficulty in this area it could constitute concern. Thinking and behaving flexibly will also show any problems that might be surfacing. If you find your child is unable to be flexible at all, in any way this too can be an area for concern.

The best thing to do if you feel one or all these symptom are present is see your child’s paediatrician. The worst thing you as a parent can do is accept a wait-and-see approach. Many concerned parents are told, “Don’t worry” or “Wait and see.” The problem with waiting is it’s the worst thing you can do. Accepting a delay on will only risk losing valuable time at an age where your child has the best chance for improvement. Whether the delay is caused by autism or some other factor, developmentally delayed kids are unlikely to simply “grow out” of their problems. In order to develop skills in an area of delay, your child needs extra help and targeted treatment. This can be the take action attitude that will make the difference in your child’s future.
