Mild Autism Tendencies "Mildly Autistic"

Autism is defined as a spectrum disorder. In defining this, it means there are wide range of symptoms in the disorder that can present. It is very likely to have “mild autistic tendencies” when diagnosed with autism. Symptoms present in different manners and it is important to know, even if they are mild what to look for. At any age, receiving treatment for even mild autism can help improve daily life and help the family receive support.

To understand what is meant by the use of the term “mildly autistic”, knowing how it’s used and what it describes will shed some light. The term is often used when an individual is clearly autistic, but also has significant spoken language and other skills. The ability to hold a conversation or perhaps other types of communication . To make matters more difficult, a person with "mild autism" may have advanced communication skills and academic abilities, but have very delayed social skills. This can be extremely difficult because of its deceptive nature. The want to communicate is available, but the proper application of social skills is not. An individual with mild autism may almost show severe sensory issues, and/or extreme difficulties with organizational skills. As a result, the individual with "mild" autism may find public school or work settings more challenging than an individual with greater language challenges but fewer sensory or social problems.

Children with mild autism tendencies may have behaviours which are not so conspicuous. These children may have normal or above-average intellectual ability. It will almost appear as though there is no issue since the communication appears to be cognizant. Their manifestations of autistic behaviour may include a lack of any ability to make friendships with other children, although they can relate to family members and to adults. Most times, parents will not recognize this as autism, instead it will be perceived as part of the child’s or person’s personality. This can be most often where the misdiagnosis occurs and a delay in therapy. Individuals with mild autism sometimes seem to misunderstand or to have difficulty picking up how to speak or respond to others, they may misinterpret a social gesture, or they may have difficulty in enjoying a joke. Although their speech may be adequate, it may be hard for them to initiate or carry on a conversation even though they may indulge in a lengthy discourse on a single subject, regardless of the response or interest of others. These types of situations can be more that frustrating for everyone involved.

Knowing how to look for symptoms in a child or an adult with mild autism can be difficult however once noticed, these symptoms should not be delayed in seeking medical help. The faster these symptoms are understood, the faster help can begin.
