January 2013 Sensory Friendly Film

by Heather Brummett on January 4, 2013

MONSTERS, INC 2-D is January’s Sensory Friendly Film.

Monsters-Inc

Select AMC Theaters participate in a monthly viewing of a movie in a sensory friendly environment. This a chance for families to spend time together enjoying movies for kids on the autism spectrum as well as other special needs.

Monsters, Inc. Plot Summary

The story centers around the workers at Monsters, Inc., the power plant of the monster world. The plant employs scarers who generate power from the screams of little children.

James P. Sullivan, or Sulley to his friends, is the company’s best man, popping out of closets and generating the most screams. He is helped by Mike Wazowski, a nervous, little one-eyed creature whose main concern is winning the best scarer contest. Their only competition is a weaseling, backstabbing co-worker named Randall.

Things are going well until one night when a human child wanders through a neglected activated door and attaches herself to Sulley. Sulley is paralyzed with fear – the monsters have been told that they will die if touched by a human and the company will suffer consequences if this breach is discovered.

Desperate for help, he interrupts Mike’s date with his girlfriend Celia, where the little girl gets loose and wreaks havoc on the restaurant patrons just by walking around.

Mike and Sulley are initially horrified to be stuck with this disgusting creature, but she soon wins Sulley’s heart with her adorable and loving behavior. He becomes so enraptured with her, that he begins to call her Boo.

They suspect that Randall is up to no good, but they think that he is cheating just to win the contest. They do not know that he deliberately left Boo’s door open for more sinister reasons.

Slowly, Sulley realizes that Randall’s intentions towards Boo are not honorable. He refuses to go along with Mike’s plan to send her back, regardless of what will happen to her.

Together, they attempt to foil Randall’s scheme but wind up in bigger trouble with Boo fighting for her life. Finally, they figure out how to save Boo and expose a scandal at Monsters Inc. They also discover a more effective way of generating power that will make scaring kids a thing of the past.
